    Description

Queen Amalia is approximately an 8 1/4" stuffed cloth doll with floppy limbs and mitten shaped hands that was manufactured by the Near East Industries of Athens, Greece, circa the 1930's-1940's. The Near East Industries dolls were handmade by local artisans under the auspices of the Near East Foundation to help refugees in the Balkans. They were often sold through the Kimport Dolls catalog. Though her name tag is missing, Queen Amalia is tagged with both the Kimport and the Near East Industries fabric labels. She is authentically dressed in provincial regal costuming sewn from fine fabrics with accompanying tasseled hat and hand sewn faux leather shoes. Her gently molded face is expressively hand painted with robust coloring, while her hair is fashioned into a braided chignon style from auburn floss.   Some strands of hair are missing to reveal "scalp" beneath.  Queen Amalia sustains soil, fading, and wear from age and storage.  The white portions of her outfit have discolored, her skirt fabric sustains darker "nubs" to its weave, and her petticoat suffers holes in its fabric.  No bad odors-- In her detailed costuming, she remains a lovely tribute to an earlier culture that is fast fading.
